The Federation of Australia was the process of six separate British self-governing colonies
forming one nation. The colonies included New South Wales, Queensland, South
Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Fiji and New Zealand were
originally part of this process, but they decided not to join the federation.
Australia became an independent nation on the 1st of January 1901.
The British Parliament passed legislation allowing the six Australian colonies
to govern in their own right as part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
